 Rev. Dr. Braasch

The Rev. Dr. Cathi Braasch brings several decades of experience in congregational life, mission and ministry development to her service as interim pastor and in several volunteer roles.
Pastor Braasch retired from full-time parish ministry in 2011 in order to serve in interim ministry. She has completed four interim appointments in Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and Nebraska, and currently serves as interim pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church, Holdrege NE. She is a clergy member of both the North American Lutheran Church (NALC) and Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC). Ordained in 2003, she pastored a 500+member, open-country congregation near Smithfield, NE from 2002-2011. From 1998-2002, she was a member of the church wide executive staff of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Her extensive work in ministry leadership development equips her to coach congregations and call committees as they search for their next settled pastor. Before entering full-time ministry in 1988, she worked for 14 years in the public sector, holding progressively responsible management positions in higher education, health and human services. She also maintained a private practice as a consultant and trainer in organizational leadership and development.

During these years, she was active in worship, educational and council leadership of rural and small-town congregations in Montana and Eastern Oregon-Idaho. She was founding president of the Montana Hospital Public Relations Association, past president of the Oregon Hospital Public Relations Organization, and served as an associate –consultant to the Montana Advisory Council on Children and Youth. Earlier in her career, she wrote for “My Devotions,” a publication of Concordia Publishing House. Pastor Braasch studied agricultural business management and animal science at California State Polytechnic College-San Luis Obispo. She earned her B.S.Ed. in journalism and American studies, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She received her M.A. in Organizational Leadership and the St. Ignatius of Loyola Magis Medal for integration of leadership, scholarship and service from Gonzaga University, Spokane WA. Her Master of Divinity degree is from The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. She is also a graduate of the Heartland Center for Spirituality three-year certification program in spiritual formation and direction. She received her Doctor of Ministry degree from the Graduate Theological Foundation in Indiana.

She is a member and Chapter Dean in the Society of the Holy Trinity (STS), a pan-Lutheran ministerium. Pastor Braasch has been involved in the Congregational Partners Project of the Atlanta, GA-based Fund for Theological Education. She served on the Vision and Planning Team for the North American Lutheran Church (NALC) and Lutheran CORE, a renewal movement of confessional Lutheran congregations, pastors and lay members. She volunteers as an assistant dean of the NALC Great Plains Mission District, and as scholarship coordinator with the NALC Candidacy Committee.

She serves on the Board of Directors for Sola Publishing, a confessional Lutheran publishing house, and on the Board of Regents, North American Lutheran Seminary. Pastor Braasch and her husband, “Red,” were married nearly 50 years before his death in 2016.

She lives on the family ranch in south-central Nebraska, manages the family’s flock of registered Suffolk sheep, and supports FFA agricultural education in Nebraska and Idaho. She has been a volunteer law enforcement chaplain and member of the rural volunteer fire and rescue department. She is an avid reader, writer, and student of comparative religion. Their only child, Sara Braasch Schmidt, died in 2016 at age 45.

I was born and raised in Ft. Wayne, baptized at St. Paul’s and attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School. After 4th grade our family move to Tucson, AZ and Dayton OH for several years. We came back to Ft. Wayne and I attended Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church and school on St. Mary’s Avenue.

I graduated from Concordia Lutheran H.S. and worked in business field for several years before marriage and family. My husband and I are Charter members of Praise Lutheran Church and have served on the Church Council at Praise and at present work with the property ministry.

We have three grown children – all CLHS graduates. We now have 6 grandchildren. Only one lives in Fort Wayne so we do tend to travel some since my husband retired. I enjoy my family and gardening. I also hope to expand my cooking skills in the future.

I was stay-at-home mom for many years, working at home in photo negative retouching for commercial photo studios. I became involved with many volunteer groups over the years including:

  • Allen Co. Alcohol Council (my brother was almost killed by a drunken driver),
  • Izaak Walton League (Dedicated to protecting our nation’s soil, air, woods, waters and wildlife) and
  • Our community association and served on their Boards and as an officer.

I have worked as a full time Real Estate Broker with Willow Creek Realty since 1987 and work with my sister in that firm. I love working with people and helping them accomplish their dreams of owning their own home or selling a home to move on with their lives in another.

Since 1987 I have worked with Lutheran Ministries Media, Inc. and their television program "Worship for Shut-Ins" ~ which is the only consistently active Lutheran Church Missouri Synod television worship service in the country. I have worked as floor director and have served on the board of directors for LMM as well as in the position of Board Chairman. This ministry is in 17 television markets including most of Indiana and 7 other states and many nursing homes and hospitals on their closed-circuit systems. This is an independent LCMS ministry and is registered with LCMS as an RSO. We have 3 full time and 1 part time employee, 82 volunteers and hope to expand further.

This ministry is very much needed and all of my husband’s family has been or is involved in military – with a nephew and his son both overseas.
One is on his 3rd Iraq tour.
